Monica began doing the official CrossFit website (mainsite) workouts in the summer of 2012 on her own without even knowing how to scale workouts. But she was determined. Her first medicine ball was a basketball filled with pea gravel that weighed 30 pounds. When the mainsite said to run an accumulated 1.5 miles with a med ball, she ran it with her homemade ball. It was the looks of awe and pure horror from passersby that fueled that particular workout and many that followed. When Blackfly CrossFit opened up in Marquette, MI, in August 2013, she attended her first structured class—three months later, she had her CrossFit Level 1 Certificate and began coaching.
In early 2015, Monica began focusing on the Olympic lifts and started training at the Olympic Training Center in Marquette. She’s been a competitive weightlifter since May 2015 and since then has qualified for the State of Michigan Weightlifting Championships (twice as a 63kg and once as a 58kg lifter), qualified for the American Open Series (both as a 63kg and 58kg lifter), and medaled at several local events.
What she loves most about coaching is being able to encourage and inspire other women to take their health and physical capabilities to the next level. She believes that the best gift one could possibly give another person is the ability to see that they’re capable of more than they thought—and to meet them on the other side of that threshold with open arms and celebration.
Monica enjoys a physical challenge and loves exploring and learning new ways to move – whether that be throwing a football with a perfect spiral or learning the nuanced art of the Moonwalk. You can find her in or outside of the gym working to achieve the perfect straddle press to handstand and surrounding herself with as many strong, positive, and encouraging women as possible.
